Sustainability and making our festival environmentally friendly is something that is really important to the Shynefest team.

We won’t be green washing and saying we are sustainable, just that we are on the journey to it, considering it in as many areas as possible and making steps towards reducing our carbon footprint.

For full transparency, below is a list of what we’re doing and where we’re at.  Hopefully one day we will be able to achieve zero carbon emissions.

Advertising:

  • We have progressed from banners, that we found other uses for at the end of each year to boards we can reuse every year
  • Our flyers are printed by Solopress, who use recycled materials and vegetable inks and we go with their option to offset carbon emissions for eco-friendly printing

Admin:

We appreciate that sustainability covers not just our impact on the environment but also our economic and social impact so we are also doing the following:

  • We have chosen a green bank for our business bank account
  • We use a ticket company that gives 50% of their fees to charities nominated by us (2024: Treloar’s and MindGreen)
  • We have teamed up with Tickets for Good to offer 200 tickets to NHS workers

Reusing and recycling:

  • We invite Woking Litter Warriors to come along to make sure our rubbish is collected and recycled
  • Our bars provide reusable rigid cups and will exchange for a clean one at the end of the night for festival goers to continue using at home
  • We reuse our water pipes each year
  • We will have a Terracycle stand to collect hard to recycle rubbish and promote their services
  • We share details of how to recycle any tents/camping equipment that are no longer useful after the festival

The Festival:

  • We don’t allow single use plastics
  • We provide drinking water and encourage empty water bottles to be brought in
  • We are exploring options for eco portable toilets
  • We are looking into using biodiesel generators
  • We are talking to our lighting company about LED lights
  • We are inviting various environmental charities and trusts to attend the festival for free to spread the word about the work they do
  • We will have a vegan food stall and all the other stalls will have vegetarian options
  • We expect the businesses we work with and who have stalls at our festival to also consider their sustainability

Transport:

  • We encourage lift sharing through our group Shynefest Chat
  • We publish details of how to attend the festival by public transport on our website (see our FAQ page) and social media
  • We reduce the amount of transport by our traders by almost exclusively working with local businesses
